HOW TO SAND A WOODEN FLOOR
I would imagine that if you are reading this you already have a
wooden floor that is tired, worn, and in need of replacement or
refinishing.
Obviously refinishing is the more positive option from a practical,
financial and environmental point of view.
How to Sand a Wooden Floor.
Many people consider the D.I.Y. route when wanting to know how
to sand a wooden floor.
This entails a trip to the hire shop where you may be offered a "square
buffer sander". This is a heavy and cumbersome machine that is pushed
along the floor by your own physical effort, as it vibrates on the
floor and in theory sands the floor.
The
problem with this is the required physical effort, the massive
amount of dust both at floor level and more importantly airborne dust
particles, the amount of sand paper that you will use (at hire
shop prices) and most of all the actual lack of result achieved. The
square buffer only actually buffs the floor and doesn't remove a
significant amount of old varnish debris, marks, dents or scratches,
revealing a poor finish and a risk of cross contamination when you
attempt to apply your varnish.
Alternatively you may opt to hire a drum / belt sander. We know for a
fact that Hire shop staff recognise these machines as "the most
thankless machines that they hire". Although these machines usually
have a dust bag attached they rarely impress in there dust collecting
effectiveness. You will also need to hire an edge sander to get where
the big machine can't and ideally a buffing sander to smooth and even
the fibres of the wood grain from the direction of the belt sanding.
The
down side of this is the expense of the machine rental, the dust, the
physical effort to handle this machinery but most of all the end
result. We get many calls from people who have attempted this over the
weekend, some may joke that "it nearly ended in divorce". We have to
deal with situations where there are severe digs and dents in the floor
from unqualified use of such machines and of course we have to deal
with people who are understandably distressed from the whole wasteful
episode.
Varnishing the floor is another consideration. The cost of the varnish,
have you the right varnish? The cost of roller sleeves/frames, brushes,
trays, handles, protective clothing and masks. The method of applying
the varnish, maintaining a wet edge, overlapping streaks and of course
the time and stress of it all.
We don't recommend D.I.Y. attempts when deciding how to sand a
wooden floor. Most people get the professionals in, but be wise!
One
company can be very different from another. Some are cheap. There
is usually a reason why they are cheap, remember the old saying "if you
buy
cheap you buy twice" we at 01 Floor
Sanding and Varnishing have
experienced many people who have taken the cheapest option only for it
to become the most expensive option. Do it once and do it right! Some
are expensive. Don't be fooled! Although it is often unwise to pay
too little it can be totally wasteful to pay too much, often only
paying the extra to fund fat cat directors, top heavy companies or
personal greed.
Obviously we would love for you to automatically choose 01 Floor
Sanding and Varnishing but we suggest that our potential clients
shop
around first. We recommend that you get three prices. And then take
time to: - Consider the Price, the Skill and Experience of the person
that is actually going to be doing the job (not necessarily the sales
agent) the Dust Free Assurances and the Quality of the Floor Finishing
Products that are offered.
